Title: Become a Digital Gunfire sponsor/subscriber!
Post by: Shirow on January 16, 2009, 08:57:43 AM
Digital Gunfire runs almost completely on other peoples generosity. The bandwidth you are using to listen to the stream is all donated by generous listeners. I'm very appreciative to these people as, without them, Digital Gunfire would have stopped streaming a very long time ago.

The big downside to this is that I am constantly losing bandwidth as people are no longer able to donate it and the available listener slots on Digital Gunfire are constantly fluctuating. Due to this, I am starting a formal sponsorship program for Digital Gunfire by which you can contribute to assist in securing reliable bandwidth for the station. There are three ways you can be a part of this program.

Current Subscriber Benefits

More are forthcoming. As of right now, as a subscriber:

Become a Subscriber

If you don't have bandwidth to donate, you can subscribe to Digital Gunfire via Paypal. All subscription income will be used to pay for site costs, purchase music and pay for bandwidth. Follow this link (http://digitalgunfire.com/paypalsubscribe.php) to set up a recurring $4.95 USD subscription. You can cancel your subscription at any time. While your subscription is active, you will receive all subscriber benefits.

Donate Bandwidth

One of the ways you can assist is by donating bandwidth. If you have access to a high speed, reliable pipe (e.g. 10Mbps symmetrical or above) and a dedicated server on that pipe (Windows or *nix) then you can donate any portion of that pipe to be a relay for Digital Gunfire. Each listener uses 128 kilobits and you can run a relay of any size, from 100 listeners to 100,000. I would be happy to manage and maintain the relay software on the server, via SSH, RDP, VNC or some other remote access method of your choosing.

If you donate at least a 100 listener server to Digital Gunfire, you will receive all subscriber benefits.

Donate Money

You can also make a one time donation to help support Digital Gunfire. Follow this link (http://www.digitalgunfire.com/paypalsubscribe.php) to make a donation through Paypal.

Thanks for reading and considering assisting in supporting Digital Gunfire! Please contact me via email or this forum for further details.

Added another benefit today - FREE STUFF!

I'll be holding regular drawings for subscribers where you will be entered to win some free stuff - CDs, t-shirts etc. Metropolis and some other labels will be donating stuff that I'll give out as I receive it.

I absolutely love Digital Gunfire and would love to subscribe an help support. (I have purchased a t-shirt in the past) My question is, on a monthly subscription of $4.95, once I set my credit card info and such, is this automatically deducted every month or do I have to donate myself manually from month to month?

It is automatic if you use the subscription link. You can cancel at any time.

Subscribing to DG was the best thing I've done all year. I'm extremely pleased and you have the best music selection I've heard so far. Thank you very much :p

Just subscribed...bless.

All these years I listened, I never knew you were right down the road--I've moved to Tucson, but listened all the time from Fox River Grove, IL.

Subscribing was the best way to show how much I love DG and this music!

Fenrisulfur,

I did look into this but it doesn't appear Moneybookers has an option for recurring subscription payments. I know you'd mentioned you didn't want to sign up for Paypal, but they do offer an option to link to your bank account if you decide to.

Thanks for your interest in Digital Gunfire :)

It would be a too big financial hit for me to support DGF regularly, but I may consider one-time donation in the future. I would buy a shirt, but I don't like it. =P

Sorry to hear that :) If people can't afford it, I don't expect any contribution - trust me, I am very aware of the difficulties of day to day finances ;) The free radio will be around as long as I can keep it around - 8 years and counting!

Been a fan for past 2 years, bought an original t-shirt a while back, this time kicked it up a gear and bought the subscribe.. Not regretting that decision one bit!

192kbps is higher quality than regular CD format, and you can actually hear the difference!

SO if your deciding if you should, I recommend it. Thank you so much Shirow!
Title: Re: Become a Digital Gunfire sponsor/subscriber!

Slightly off topic, but...

192kbps is higher quality than regular CD format, and you can actually hear the difference!

I'm afraid you are very wrong here. 320 kbps stream isn't even CD quality and here's why:

CD audio is sampled 44,100 times per second at 16 bits per sample per channel. Stereo is 2 channels. This means that what you are hearing is effectively 1,411,200 bits per second, or in streaming terms,  1,378.125 kbps. No where near 192 kbps (kilobits per second).

I am now going to direct you towards this website http://computer.howstuffworks.com/mp31.htm which clearly explains how mp3 is compressed and why it will never be as good as CD even if you can't hear the difference.

That said, I will add a 192kbps stream is a LOT better than a 128kbps stream even if it's not perfect ;)

Well, they're definitely not the greatest but I think the only thing to really be concerned about is if you're a seller, not a purchaser.

That being said, I know people have worries and I'll look for something else that works internationally and supports subscriptions.

Just my two cents if it helps ease anyone's mind about using PayPal. i've used it for years now, since '03 as a buyer and mayhap even moreso as a seller. i can honestly say i have never once had any kind of security issue. Though it's always free to purchase with, one thing that our non-U.S. resident DG fans here might not like is that there is a currency conversion fee, though i don't know what it is. The only thing that irks me occasionally is as a seller you get charged just under 3%. Though i suppose that's not really that much. Not trying to pitch an advertisement for them or anything, just throwing out my personal experience if it helps at all.

Yeah, but as far as purchases go it is still free. i was able to find the info and apparently it's only the recipient that gets the charge; an extra 1%. There are fees however for transfers converted to USD, which vary by country (specific country info i couldn't find but it varies, depending on payment method, form 0.5% - 3.9% and + $0.30). However, apparently the Sender decides who pays the fees - the sender or the recipient.

I wonder if the 3% is actually imposed by credit card companies.  They typically take a percentage on transactions from merchants, and maybe paypal makes it's money by tacking on a bit more?

Hmm..thats not a bad idea.. But it is so complicated! I have problems to send money to country in Eurozone, less so to USA.. Shirow knows about this problem and is working on it..

Id embrace a universal solution for all "non-american" and "not pay-pal users"..
Something like periodical money transfer to abroad..
I had something similar during first year of my studies (I study abroad, in adjacent country) but my bank cancelled this possibility, damned! >:(
Because of safety.. So I can nothing for now..
So Im asking, if somebody would know, wouldnt he..

It's tough for me because I have to use some third party. I don't have the kind of income through the site to justify getting a merchant account which would allow for those kind of options.

I have yet to find another provider that allows foreign transactions and supports subscriptions. I would be willing to do mailed $ if that was something you wanted to do, but it is definitely a pain in the butt for both parties.

Hey, first post. I've been listening to this fantastic radio for almost 2 years. I intend to donate a few euros when possible :)

I've read the part about the bandwidth costs. So I have a suggestion: (also) broadcast in AAC or AAC+. I've read that AAC 96KB or AAC+ 64KB sounds as good as MP3 128.

Cheers :)

Hey SHIROW.  I lost that first post on this topic as I am still learning about this digital stuff and how it works.  So I tried again with that hey hey hey and hopefully I will get this one in.  Anyways a good show you got on the go here and how could I not support it.  I am from the old school of industrial and am in the process of figuring out how to put what I have on vynil to MP3.  When I get that done would you be interested in playing some of the good shit like Portion Control's-Abbo Dabbo or Death by Venom.  That stuff is to cool to not listen to it so if I can I would like to share it with who ever wants to hear it.  Like Neubauten's Sand.  I want to get it on MP3 so I dont wear out the vynil.  And how can I get a photo on my profile?  Later Shirow and keep up the good work.  Cheers mate.

Hello and thanks for that advice back.  And thanks for Digital Gunfire with all this deadly leading edge ammunition.  Still in the middle of Labrador and glad for not having to duck with this gunfire all around me.  But the biggest frustration of all.  Only computer speakers.
One more week to home and then the big sound becomes huge patched through my amp.  The walls are going to shake as my grinder carves steel.

i mean ... as far as i remember one of the constant problems with (most of) the DG crowd was the constant shortage of money
so it could be as simple as that

or the music got too repetitive

i don't think it's of anybody's concern except shirow's if he was so inclined to know in case it's something which could improve the service

Exactly. Sense of priority. It's not that $5 is too much, it's that they deem the money better spent elsewhere. I won't ever fault someone for having other interests to spend their money on, but call it like it is.

Ddd, not right now. Some of my files are only 192Kbps so I would have to re-procure/re-rip a lot of material. It would also use quite a bit more bandwidth.

Not likely in the near future.

Right from the bottom up I was chuckling at the whole concept of the lack of prioritising for what is good in life.  And you sure cant beat Digital Gunfire for the genre of music it has.  So ya, we may as well just unsescribe.  I know it was difficult for me to let that 5 buck bundle go.  I want it back but my senses are telling me that I still want more of DG.  Its an ongoing back and forth in my head.  Yet begrudgingly, I think that I will reinlist.  Ha Ha Ha.....

I'mma just march right in here and assume this is the correct place!

I'd like to say a big thank you to Shirow and anyone else involved with this station. It is by far the best station I've ever come across, so I intend to stick around. While I recognise plenty of songs on here, there are many more that are new to me - perfect for discovering new music! I'm a bit antisocial - I'll probably never post again (it's me, not you) so my (heh!) last words will be...

THANK YOU!
